Thomas Jefferson publicly opposed gambling and called it “the devil’s game”, but he did gamble. Andrew van Buren bet money and clothes that he would become president. American colonists employed lotteries to raise funds for military defense, as Congress did in 1776 when they organized a lottery of five million dollars in prizes to help fund the War for Independence. In 1748, Benjamin Franklin organized a Pennsylvania lottery to help buy military supplies.
