AcePlay Poker, a free-play online poker room offered by the Stratosphere in Las Vegas, announced this week it will be shutting down in November before ever shifting to real-money online poker.
Amidst the recent announcement that Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware will be sharing player pools, the news of AcePlay’s closure comes as a surprise as they will not be cashing in on the license to operate real-money online poker once held by parent company American Casino & Entertainment Properties (ACEP), which owns the Stratosphere.
In an $850 million deal this week, Golden Entertainment acquired ACEP. According to acePLAYpoker.com's blog, “The site is not part of the new company’s immediate plans,” hence its impending closure.
AcePlay's Run
The site used the Ongame poker software and offered players free online poker games 24 hours a day, seven days a week for chances to win promotions including show tickets, rides at the top of the tower including SkyJump, and other forms of entertainment at the Stratosphere.
The original plan when AcePlay launched in 2013 was to use the play-money site to build its brand and customer base in Nevada ahead of authorized real-money iGaming in the state. At that time, director of gaming development for ACEP Alec Driscoll said, “We are also positioning ACEP and acePLAYpoker.com for the potential approval of legalized online gaming.”
The site never utilized its gaming license to offer real-money games, however, and pretty soon, AcePlay Poker will be bowing out of the online poker market entirely.
In light of this news, WSOP NV, along with WSOP NJ, is looking to be the principal beneficiary of the recently announced liquidity between the first three states to offer online poker — at least in the beginning. And with Pennsylvania passing iGaming legislation this week, Nevada, along with the other three states offering regulated iGaming, will likely be attracting more suitors seeking an online poker license to operate and capitalize on the promising liquidity on the horizon, and AcePlay Poker will not be a competitor.
